The I-485, formally the Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, is the final step in getting your green card from inside the United States. Approval of your immigrant petition (the EB-1A, EB-1B, or NIW) establishes that you qualify for permanent residence, but it is the I-485 that is the actual petition for the green card. If you are in the U.S. in lawful status, you can generally adjust status without leaving the country or going through a U.S. consulate abroad. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can apply with you.
